July 2025 | Resignation of Christian Schuster
Hamburg | July 3, 2025
Professor Schuster, who had served as President of the NIT since early 2024, has announced his resignation for personal reasons.
"My professional activities as a researcher and head of an institute at TU Hamburg, combined with the honorary position of NIT President, collectively demand more time and attention than I will have available in the foreseeable future. An EU project on artificial intelligence with numerous academic and industrial partners will heavily occupy me for the next three and a half years. It is with a heavy heart that I am therefore stepping down from my role at the NIT," stated Professor Christian Schuster.
Christian Schuster is credited with significant reforms at the NIT, including the introduction of a new degree program (Master of Business Analytics and AI) and leading a positive development in the membership of the supporting association, which owns the NIT.
"Christian Schuster has decided to resign as President of the NIT effective June 30, 2025. We respect his decision to primarily dedicate himself to research and teaching at TUHH and thank him for his important and lasting contributions to the NIT," commented Professor Andreas Timm-Giel, President of TU Hamburg.
Christian Schuster added: "True to our motto 'Be the Change,' I dedicated myself to making the NIT future-proof by adapting to the current environment and revitalizing ties with the TUHH faculty. The founding idea of the NIT, to offer internationally oriented management education for engineers on the TUHH campus, remains of great importance."
"Christian Schuster led the NIT through a challenging time with great seriousness, noticeable commitment, and clear results orientation," praised Norbert Basler, Chairman of the Supervisory Board, acknowledging the outgoing President's achievements. "For that, we are very grateful to him. Mr. Schuster set important strategic directions in a short period and sustainably sharpened the institute's profile."
"I greatly enjoyed working with Christian Schuster – our collaboration was characterized by strong mutual trust and an excellent complementarity of our skills," said Dr. Klemens Kleiminger, CEO and Managing Director of the NIT. "I regret his decision to leave the NIT all the more. At the same time, I am deeply grateful to him for what we have achieved together: his dedication and crucial role in the successful introduction of the new M.Sc. in Business Analytics and AI degree program, as well as in attracting new members for the NIT's owner association, will be remembered for a long time. True to the NIT's motto 'Be the Change,' Christian has positively shaped and developed the NIT."
Professor Otto von Estorff, long-time president of the NIT and chairman of the owner’s association, will temporarily assume the duties of President. A successor will be sought through a structured process in collaboration with the Supervisory Board of the Northern Institute of Technology Management.
